Huis Marseille: Dierbaar

Amsterdam, 11 november 2005. Opening from the exhibiton "Dierbaar" by Jan van der Ijken: starting in 1975 the Rijksmuseum's History of the Netherlands Department has given an annual assignment to a photographer. As of 1997 this assignment has been organized in collaboration with the NRC Handelsblad newspaper under the title Document Nederland. This yearís theme is the relationship between people and animals in the Netherlands. Photographer Jan van IJken portrays 2 different aspects of animals in relation to people. On the one hand, consumption and science and on the other, peopleís at times rather bizarre love for their pets or animals in general, from shows featuring clearly primped-up animals and cow-cuddling workshops to animal cemeteries. Opening by Ivo de Wijs.
