3D Art Letter #18

Gould's 3D List: Week #18

This weeks list will be abbreviated because I am back at the Openbare Bioliotheek after giving up my work space, reluctantly, at De Volkskrantgebouw. The status of the 3D List will be predicated on my, once again, having a work space. What are the possiblities? Well, when you consider that every 3D List, through the month of December, requested assistance and resulted in nothing, I guess you can say it doesn't look good. Sorry.
Week # 18 will be limited to coverage of Realisme09 (now at: Passenger Terminal Amsterdam building) and the section: What is Happening This Week, everyone's favorite. ***

Realisme09 (Passenger Terminal Amsterdam, on the waterfront).

Along with The Red Beret, 3D did Realisme09. Our intention was to coordinate the short reviews with a click on to his website and that particular work of art. Unfortunately, as we work together, today, we CANNOT do it. Sorry. However you can read the following list at The Red Beret's web-site and we will try to align the text with photos. Wish us luck! Go to: An impression Realisme09 Art Fair Take a look the impression will surprise you. ***

At the entrance to the Realisme09 there are two large sculpture pieces: Klaas Gubbels "Je táime," (rusted iron, 244x176x40 cms., @ 22,500 euros) represented by Galerie Willy Schoots. At the escalators, you will see Emile van de Kruk's "Wezenloze wolskracht" (210x150x50 cms., @ 16,000 euro). Impression

THE FAIR:
Collectie Harms Rolde (Stand #12) Tialf Sparnaay's Ice Cream Sundae (3D's title) even looks good enough to eat in January. Forget, brrrrr, and hand me a spoon. Pop school style with vibrant colors. (oil on linnen, 150x100 cms., @ 32,000 euros). Also, Carel Willink (oil on linnen, 62x80, 1933, price on request). Henk Helmantel (oil on panel, 119x163 cms., price on request). Pieter Pander (40x40 cms., @ 7,500 euro).
...and 3D thought this would be easy...however a descrepency has arisen this early into the review. See below.
Galerie Lieve Hemel (my notes say Stand #14, the catalog list it as Stand #13). Gerard Schiemer (damn, I forgot to make notes) (oil on panel, 70x50 cms., @ 7,500). Alexandra Thiel (oil, 40x50 cms., @ 4,500 euro). Ben Snijders (oil on panel, 15x20 cms., @ 600 euro; and 30x45 cms., @ 13,500. Rudolf Hellebaut (oil on panel, 10x8 cms., @ 1,600 euro, tiny in size but nice things come in small packages).
Galerie Lilja Zakirova (Stand #14, not to be confused with above entry). Anwar Abdoullaeu. There is an element of Chagall in this figurative work, however it is not derivative. (oil on canvas, 100x80 cms., @ 5,000 euro). Katernia Belkina (spelling according to catalog, my notes has it as "Boelkina," whatever...3D was moving fast, so it's anyone's guess). (Photographs, 100x75 cms., @ 4,000 euro). Natalya Zaloznaya (oil, 110x130 cms., @ 6,000). Robert Andersen (oils, 55x40 cms., @ 3,000).
Galerie Blanca Landgraff (Stand # 15). Menno Du Gardin has an unusual technique with a strong Pop School flavor. (180x140 cms., 4,700 euro). Herman Muys (Ceramic horses, 60x70 cms., @ 6,000 euros). Pieter Hiemstra (ceramic, 49x24x15 cms., @ 2,000 euro).
Contempo Galerie (Stand # 16). Juan Bejan (Again, forgot to take notes...oil on canvas, 100x81 cms., @ 22,500 euros). Nikki Le Nobel (oil/silk on canvas, 140x200 cms., @ 7,250 euro). Gurt Swanienberg (oil on panel, 36x17 cms., @ 3,850 euros), Jan Ros (oil on panel, 75x100 cms., @ 3,950 euros). 3D List readers are familiar with the photographic genre "motion photography." Ros does it in oil.
Galerie Rademakers (Stand # 17). Marleen Vogels hangs a large canvas in only four colors (white included) and the style is like a comic strip drawing but it is beautiful in both its abstraction and composition quality. (165x200 cms., @ 3,000). Femke Teussink (photos, 70x105 cms., @ 1,950 eruo). Thom Boekhoven (oil on panel, 120x100 cms., @ 8,450). Anke Berne (Bronzes, 30 to 40 cms., priced from 1,400 to 1,825 euro).
Galerie De Roos van Tudor (Stand #19). Eline Jansen's work is weird in technique, style and subject matter, but very original...that should get your attention (mixed technique, 200x125 cms., @ 2,900). Gabrielle Kroese (80x100 @ 1,650). Waler Bosman (object, paint on box, 35x20x25 cms., @ 1,450 euro).
Galerie Mark Peet Visser (Stand #18). My notes say this about Hans Kanters' large painting, "XXX rated, but great colors and composition and loaded with symbolism (100x120 cms., @ 48,000 euro). Hmmm, for some reason, this is the only artist 3D listed for this gallery. I must have been distracted by Kanters' work.
Willem Kerseboom Gallery (Stand #20). This galleries specializes in Chinese artist. So expect to see a very good over view of contemporary artists from that country. Xiao Ping paints faces that look like they have been done for a children's book. The result is colorful and, at times, dramatic canvases (150x100 cms., @ 10,000 euro). Yin Yun ("Three Babies" sculpture, 120 cms., high @ 20,000 euro). Zhang Hongbo (150x190 cms., @ 12,000 euro).
Galerie Willy Schoots International Contemporary Art (Stand #23). Paul Smulders uses a mixed technique to paint large canvases with mixed subject matter. Figurative, expressionistic, what looks like photography, linear abstraction, et al. (mixed media on canvas, 200x180 cms., @ 7,600). Klaas Gubbels (oil on canvas, 90x105 cms., 9,700 euros).
Galerie Roger Katwijk (Stand #24). Jorn Janssen does expressionistic lacquer painting on honeycomb cardboard with wild colors (105x140x4 cms., @ 3,900 euros). Zhuang Hong Yi makes very unusual objects that look like dimensional paintings with a kitschy appeal (mixed media 220x150 cms., @ 15,000 euro).Koen Dudink (stoneware on wood, 60x90 cms., @ 3,000 euro). Henri Platt (water colors, 93x133 cms., @ 5,500 euro).
Jan van Hoof Galerie (Stand #25). Marie van Heeswijk is, certainly, a representational landscape paianter but she does it in an expressionistic manner. Bold colors and not what you expect in a landscape (190xx70 cms., @ 6,550). Joroen Allart (acrylic on canvas, 150x150 cms., @ 5,500 euro). Marjolijn Mandersloot (Bronze, ed. 6, 80x80x17 cms., @ 9,800 euros). Sofie van Dam (photos, Ed. 7, 96x120 cms., @ 1,750 euro).
Galerie Wiek XX (Stand 28). Erik Nikkessen"s work is simple yet meticulous in its technique; and with vibrant colors. (oil on panel, 30x12 cms., @ 1,350). Suzan Visser (oil on panel, 10x30 cms., @ 1,950 euro). Paul Boswijk (oil, 60x45 cms., @ 6,000 euro). Stijn Reitman (oil on "masoniet," circular, diamter 9.5 cms., @ 400 euro).
Jaski Art Gallery (Stand #26). Chris Berens does unusual mixed media collage work. He was a prize winning graphic designer that went to being a full time artist a few years back. (mixed media/collage, 65x65 cms., @ 6,500 euro). Emilo Kruithof (lithograph, ed. 150, 40x25 cms., @ 375 euro). Whooops...there is an object, sitting on the floor, with the name tag literally one cm from the floor. 3D got on his hands and knees (ah, what he won't do in the name of art) but still could not read the tag, so one of the gallery people said he would write down the info (I couldn't follow the French) and this is what he wrote: "Le Gentil Truand, Les Deux Goncons). Well, being an illiterate in French, as well as, Dutch (I don't discriminate) I did not know which was the title and which was the artist name. So, I checked the catalog and can't find either as a person's name under their listing of "Gallery'Artists." Nor can I find a name that I consider to be French. But, I digress...(object, taxidermity, 70x50x50 cms., @ 4,500 euro). Fun piece! Dorien Plaat (acrylic on canvas, 140x100 cms., @ 2,500 euro).
Galerie De Ploegh (Stand 27). Miep Maarse makes bronzes using the forms of unusual animals. There are two hipos displayed, end to end, and available individually that are wearing bronze scarfs. Hey, folks, its been cold lately; and these are African animals after all. (50x50x20 cms., @ 6,500 euros). Frank van Ede (Bronze, 20x30 cms., @ 1,300 euro). Drage Pecenica ("Scraperboard techniek," 55x45 cms., 11,500 euro). Frank Dekker (oil on canvas, 100x110 cms., @ 3,950 euro).
De Twee Pauwen Stand #22). Riccardo Bonsignori's work looks like photo realism until you get up close and see it as an impressionistic style painting. Can't envision it in your mind? Then, go see it at the fair! Alessandro Papetti (165x130 cms., @ 18,500 euro). Coren Geus (oil on linnen, 45x60 cms., @ 3,500 euro). Poen de Wijs (acrylic on canvas, 80x100 cms., @ 18,000 euro).
Galerie Mokum (Stand # 21). Joke Frima. If you are into pumpkins you'll like the colors of these pumpkins in a cabbage patch. (oil on canvas, 100x180 cms., @ 22,500 euro). Albert Greving (oil on pannel, 120x45 cms., @ 7,500 euro). Manon Visione (Bronze, Ed. 12, 65 cms., high, @ 1,750 euro).
It was at this point people began to enter the exhibition area for the private public advance showing (that means, by invitation only). So, The Red Beret and 3D decided to hurry, hurry and limit our efforts to one artist/gallery (or more if possible); with people around it is difficult to photograph the work. So, sorry.
Maisenbacher Art Gallery (Stand 30). Ottmar Hörl goes to the dogs...well, sorta. In a rather dramatic display there are 100, 200 or more plastic dogs in black and gold, ala Jeff Koons. The dimensions of the woof-woofs are 44x25x40 cms., and their price makes these works of art the cheapest at the fair and probably your best buy. There is an open edition for both the black and gold; and each has the artist name engraved on them. Also, a signed edition of 250 that are priced @ 200 euro.
Galerie De Vis (Stand #29). ...And more from Jeff Koons? Well, a three dimensional dog was at the entrance of the gallery's booth. It measures 55x55x55 cms., and is ALL in oil strokes and with almost as many colors as there are strokes. An unusual piece. (@ 4,200 euro.)
Galerie Jacoba Wijk (Stand #8). Annelies Middel. She paints miniatures featuring babies and kids and on a variety of material: tile, wood, glass, ceramic, etc. Nice work. (sizes from 2x2 cms., to 30x20 cms; 300 to 1,100 euro).
artKITCHEN GALLERY (Stand #7). 3D use to attend their openings when they had been located at the Herengracht. They have since relocated to a location near Halfweg. In looking at the map, I determined it would be nearly impossible to find, thus, I have not went. So it is always good to see this avant-garde gallery at the Realisme fair....And, it's Jeff Koons all over again. Hans van Bentem's large porcelain piece, titled "Dick Rider" (50x80x50 cms.,) should be rated "XXX" not only because of the title, but also the imagery. A naked lady is "riding" a rather oversized penis...kid you not...not for prime time viewing...(@ 5,250). Hasns van Bentem (Bronze, @ 9,500 euro).
Galerie Besselaar Hedendaagse Kunst (Stand #9)....and more Jeff Koons' influenced art work. Gerard van den Berg does trains, toilets (that's what the gallery holder said, but no examples on display) and soap dishes. The train is on display (ceramic, 30x133x24 cms., @ 4,000 euro) and appears to be in motion. Nice. Henk van den Bosch (painting, 140x140 @ 4,500 euro).
Galerie Utrecht (Stand #10). Lotta Blokker presents a contemporary cruscifixation bronze standing 160 cms., high with its arms extended to 154 cms. In a word, dramatic! (@ 27,500). Caandace Charlton (oil on linen, 100x130 cms., @ 9,300 euro).
Galerie Petit (Stand #11). Johan Scherft paints "fantasies" in a meticulous manner. The largest is 30x65 cms., oil on panel @ 4,500; and there are 10 more examples to see. Hans Bionda (trip-tych, oil on panel, three for 4,500 euro). Maarten Welbergen does an unusual self portrait series (cut-outs, tempra/oil on panel, 90 cms., high and 50 cms., wide). Jan Kuiper (color pencil + paint, on wood, 50x40 cms., @ 3,500 euro).
3D apolgizes to any gallery that was unintentionally missed, we were moving fast. Two galleries that are knowingly missing from this list was at their request directly or indirectly. One was still hanging the work when we arrived and when I asked who certain artist were and the price, 3D was told, "I'm too busy!"
The other was, Gallery LL. My apologies to Jeroen Buitenman, George Heidweiller and George Huysman all of whom I have reviewed in the past. I had made notes, for each of them, and The Red Beret did the photographs. I then went an asked the gallery holder, "You dropped me from your mailing list." He replied, "Yes!" I then asked why? "Because...." There was a long pause and as he begin to turn away, I said, "Because, why?" He finally answered, "I don't want the publicity." A coveer story? But, so be it! Sorry guys.
Finally, as to the art on display, 3D would be amis if he didn't include the room, off to the side, and hard to find, which houses the Wackers Academie exhibition of former students. This non-avant-garde art academy has, over the years, produced several outstnding and exceptional artists. It is always a pleasure to view what they hang. During the fair "current students(?)" can be seen working on location. On opening night there were 12 at easels and in the process of creating. Search it out!
Notable "no shows," at this year's fair: Nico Koster and Steltman. Pity. Is this a sign of hard times?

WEDNESDAY: 21st January
___?___ De Appel (N.B. @ Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam, Leidseplain). "The Old Brand New," a lecture series. "In the arts, the concept 'new' is an ideal as well as a curse. The avant-garde has been declared dead and 'the cult of the new' is past its peak. The pursuit of absolute originality and total innovation has give way to techniques such as remix and post-production and concepts like eclecticism and syncretism. Is 'new' still permitted, how new is neo, how innovative is retro? By looking at the term 'new' in light of 'old' subjects such as virtuosity, beauty, knowledge and idealism, the lecture series THE OLD BRAND NEW proposes to free 'new' of its stale image and present it in its full complexity." Strangley enough, the invite did not mention the times. There is a 8 euro entry FEE; or get 4 entrees for 28 euros; or 7 for 42 euro. Hey, De Appel has an excuse for charging a fee...they are broke! Subsidy cut backs have forced them to leave their present location. This lecture series will be a once a month program and this is the first and titled: New Subversion. More info: www.theoldbrandnew.nl
...and that's all 3D wrote...remember, only YOU can save the 3D List by offering 3D working space with an Internet connection...he'll bring the PC.
